HGA is on the cusp of its 30th birthday

HGA Personal Care Consultants founder - Dr Harriette Grooh - is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been working in geriatric and mental health care for her entire professional career.

In 1983, after ten years in the fields of care management, gerontology and clinical practice, she moved from the public sector into the private sector by founding Harriette Grooh & Associates Personal Care Consultants – a unique consultation and care management firm.

What began as a solo practice serving the needs of elderly and disabled beneficiaries of individual trusts and family offices in San Francisco and the Greater Bay Area is now approaching its 30th year – and has evolved into an interdisciplinary clinical team with clients across the USA and Canada.

The HGA team is composed of a gerontological clinical psychologist, who is a certified care manager; a clinical psychologist, who specializes in milieu therapy; a licensed clinical social worker; registered nurses, and geriatric nurse specialists.

The clinical team is vastly experienced in home care, palliative care, and treatment coordination for persons coping with mental illness and/or substance use, and intellectual disability. This team has round-the-clock access to a group of advisers from a range of related disciplines.

Our consultants’ team includes advanced practice professionals who have devoted their research, education and careers to their respective subjects. The geriatric nurse practitioner, the geriatric psychiatrist, the gero-psycho-bio pharmacologist and palliative medicine pharmacist, and the public benefits specialist are all recognised experts in their fields and bring an invaluable extra dimension of expertise to the caring culture of HGA.

Explains Dr Grooh: “Trying to find quality care, evaluate difficult options and handle all logistics on your own can be frustrating, time-consuming and emotionally draining.

Because of our in-depth knowledge of health care systems, Harriette Grooh & Associates is uniquely qualified to offer you the best options for your specific situation – including options you may not even know exist.

Care decisions sometimes present multiple, conflicting pressures. We address these pressures and come up with a potential plan of action.

This plan is based on your preferences, personal history, needs and resources, and is treated with the same professional discretion you would expect from your physician and attorney.”

Focusing on our founder

Dr. Harriette Grooh is a licensed clinical psychologist who received her PhD in clinical psychology from Palo Alto University, formerly the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology, in California.

She graduated MA in clinical psychology from the University of San Francisco, and was awarded her BA by the University of Rochester in New York.

In the late 1970s, as geriatric coordinator in the Transitional Services unit of Marin County Community Mental Health Services, Dr Grooh’s mission was to aid in re-integrating all gero-psychiatric patients returning from the state hospital to the local community and to prevent new hospitalizations from occurring.

She accomplished this goal by creating the first Marin Mobile Geriatric Evaluation Team, comprised of a gero-psychiatrist, physician, geriatric nurse specialist and mental health counselor, and in 1983, took her expertise to the private sector by establishing Harriette Grooh & Associates Personal Care Consultants.

Dr. Grooh is a certified care manager who has served on the board of directors for the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers (NAPGCM) of which she has recently been made a Fellow of the Leadership Academy. In 1988 she was one of eight founding directors of the Western Regional Chapter of NAPGCM, and served as president of the thirteen-state Western Regional Chapter from 2008 - 2009. A notable career milestone came in 2003 when she received the Rose Kleiner Award for Exceptional Service in Care Management.

Dr Grooh is a founding director of the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Northern Nevada (the largest chapter of the national Alzheimer’s Association).  She served six years on the board of directors – acting as chair of the Audit Committee and Program Committee.

Before the formation of the Northern California and Northern Nevada Chapter, she served for six years on the board of the Alzheimer’s Association, North Bay Chapter (Marin, Sonoma, and Napa Counties).

In 2010, she joined the board of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group on which she serves as secretary.

HGA Personal Care Consultants is a member of the multi-disciplinary team of the San Francisco Consortium for Elder Abuse Prevention at the Institute on Aging, and Dr Grooh is a member of the San Francisco Bio-Ethics Forum and the East Bay Women’s Forum.
